The team from the Faculty of Law at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University participated in the 2024 Jessup Regional Summer School in Tashkent, Republic of Uzbekistan, from August 5th to 12th.
The primary goal of the regional summer school is to promote Philip C. Jessup's international Moot Court and to help in student preparation. Every year, students from the law faculties of universities in Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan take part in the summer school. It is noteworthy that TSU is the first Georgian university invited to participate in this event.
Eka Siradze, an Associate Professor at the International Law Institute of the Faculty of Law, was invited as a lecturer at the summer school. She delivered four lectures on crucial international legal issues also relevant for moot court. At the conclusion of the summer school, she also served as a judge in mini moot courts.
Konstantine Kopaliani, a distinguished alumnus of the 2019 graduating class of the TSU Faculty of Law's international law program and a lawyer at "White & Case" specializing in international arbitration, was also invited as a lecturer and judge. Having represented TSU in the international stage of the Jessup Moot Court in 2019, he now serves as a judge in different national and international rounds of Jessup.
The students representing TSU at the summer school included Tamar Kalandia (7th semester student of the international law program), Elene Kakulia (7th semester student of the law program), and Nutsa Nadashvili (an assistant at the International Law Institute and graduate of international law program). The summer school culminated in mini moot trials, where the Georgian students performed with success.
During their visit to Tashkent, the TSU delegation met with Professor Dilmora Umarkhanova, Dean of the Faculty of International Law and Corporate Legislation at Tashkent State Law University. The meeting focused on planning future collaborations.
Additionally, Associate Professor Eka Siradze and the students held a meeting with the faculty of international law and public law at the University of World Economy and Diplomacy. The meeting involved Professor Umid Yakubkhojaev, Associate Dean of the Faculty, Head of the Legal Clinic Ziyedula Ubaidulaev, and students. The meeting was organized by Dr. Amanlik Gulimov, a long-standing collaborator with the TSU Faculty of Law and the International Law Institute.
The meetings were conducted in a warm and constructive atmosphere, with both parties agreeing on the importance of continued cooperation and joint projects.
The Institute of International Law is very grateful to the organizers of the summer school—Salimjon Yusupov and Elmira Usenova, as well as Tashkent State University of Law, the University of World Economy and Diplomacy, and Konstantine Kopaliani.
