Dimitri Uznadze, credited as one of the founders of Tbilisi State University, is known for establishing the fields of psychology and education in Georgia. Following the university's establishment in 1918, he took charge of opening the Department of Psychology. The "Pedagogical Institute" was also founded by him in 1919. A psychological laboratory was set up in 1923. In 1922, the general university chair of pedagogy was opened within the newly created pedagogical faculty, serving all the university's faculties. Over time, these two branches have operated within different faculties or as independent faculty (psychology since 1990).
In October 2014, the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences was formed by separating psychology from the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences and the Pedagogical Institute of Educational Research from the Faculty of Humanitarian Sciences. Currently, the Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences has up to 2400 students across three teaching levels, and is served by 60 professors. The faculty offers a range of programs in psychology and education. These include 2 undergraduate educational programs, 2 integrated undergraduate and graduate educational programs, a minor program in psychology, a teacher training program, and approximately 20 master's and doctoral programs.
