Lado Chanturia Elected as President of Section at the European Court of Human Rights

Lado Chanturia, Professor of Law at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University and a judge at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), was elected on the 23rd of September, 2024 via a closed vote as the President of a Section of the ECHR.

 

Tbilisi State University congratulates Professor Chanturia on his well-deserved new post and wishes him success in his professional endeavours. Professor Chanturia’s contributions to the development of Georgian law are invaluable. He was instrumental in the creation of the Georgian Civil Code and can be considered one of the founding figures of modern Georgian law. A former Minister of Justice of Georgia, former President of the Supreme Court of Georgia, and former Ambassador of Georgia to Germany, Professor Chanturia has been serving as a judge at the European Court of Human Rights since the 8th of January, 2018, and as Vice President of the 5th Section of the Court since May 23rd, 2023.

Lado Chanturia has played a pivotal role in guiding numerous Georgian jurists to European research and educational institutions, acting as a catalyst for their development.

 

In 2023, Professor Chanturia was elected as a member of Academia Europaea. In addition to his contributions at Tbilisi State University, Professor Chanturia has also held academic positions at the University of Bremen, the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law in Hamburg, and Christian-Albrechts University in Kiel.
