Students of TSU vocational program - "Library Work" are engaging in practical learning at the university library. This profession has been taught at TSU since 2016, offering vocational students a unique opportunity to complete both theoretical and practical studies in one of the richest libraries in the region.
The TSU library houses 8 million books and over 22 million publications and patents from 60 countries. Students and faculty members have access to international scientific electronic databases and resources.
As Zurab Gaiparashvili, head of the "Library Work" vocational program and director of the TSU library, stated, the program at Tbilisi State University stands out for its advantage - vocational students have the best opportunities to gain practical experience. "We have a large, well-known, and well-stocked library at the university where students can engage in practical learning actually in every aspect necessary for their future careers as professional librarians," Gaiparashvili noted.
One of the recent student visits took place in the Shota Rustaveli Reading Hall. Vocational education students are visiting the Shota Rustaveli Central Reading Hall. We believe it is essential for them to be involved in practical work, explore the archives, and thoroughly understand the specific nature of library operations," said Khatuna Chugoshvili, head of the reading hall and vocational instructor.
Students themselves are also satisfied with the practical component. According to Levan Kavlashvili, they had the opportunity to see the archives and understand how the reading hall operates. "I believe that today's field lecture and every similar session are crucial because they include practical elements. Along with theoretical learning, we have the chance to engage with books directly, which is essential for our future profession," he stated.
Ia Chikvinidze emphasized that exposure to a professional environment impacts every student's future career. "We are primarily familiarizing ourselves with practical tasks, which will be extremely useful in our future work. It is particularly interesting that we are conducting practical exercises within the library itself. And the library staff, who are highly skilled professionals, are the ones teaching us," she noted.
