The Library of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University hosted the event “The Theatre of the Century,” organized by the students of the TSU vocational educational program “Librarian” and the “Library Friends Club.”
The event was dedicated to the century-long history of the university theatre. Exhibition materials preserved in the TSU Museum were displayed in the Maro Makashvili Hall.
“The Theatre of the Century” was planned within the framework of the vocational module “Cultural and Educational Events.” The event was attended by representatives of the TSU Vocational Education Center, students, actors of the TSU theatre troupe “Skhveni,” and invited guests.
Student creative circles at Tbilisi State University were formed shortly after its founding, laying the foundation for a student troupe. One of the university’s first “cultural events” was held in May 1918, marking the 30th anniversary of the stage career of the prominent 20th-century actor Viktor Gamkrelidze. From 1919, a Department of Georgian Music was established at Tbilisi State University, and the already well-known composer Kote Potskhverashvili—author of the anthem of the Democratic Republic of Georgia—was invited as a lecturer. At the same time, the first theatre troupe was founded, with Alexander Tsutsunava invited by the university as its director.
