Tbilisi State University is hosting a workshop of the Siracusa International Institute for Criminal Justice and Human Rights. The workshop is part of a larger initiative to provide Georgian prosecutors and investigators with practical knowledge in international criminal law from foreign experts in the field. The workshop will focus on the investigation and prosecution of particularly serious crimes.
The pilot training program (REACT) is being conducted within the framework of the memorandum signed between the Institute of Comparative and Transnational Criminal Law of the TSU Law Faculty and the Siracusa International Institute for Criminal Justice and Human Rights (Siracusa Institute). The project is an initiative of the Siracusa Institute, which is being implemented in cooperation with the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia and concerns a pilot training program for Georgian investigators and prosecutors.
The training program is designed to enhance the qualifications of prosecutors and investigators in the prosecution of crimes that have been deliberated by the International Criminal Court, including war crimes, aggression, genocide, and crimes against humanity.
The opening ceremony was attended by a number of distinguished guests, including Nino Gvenetadze, Deputy Rector of TSU; Giorgi Dgebuadze, Deputy Dean of the Law Faculty; Natia Merebashvili, Deputy Prosecutor General of Georgia; Merab Turava, Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Georgia; representatives of the Siracusa Institute; and professors from Leiden University. Additionally, a number of field specialists from Georgia and abroad were present.
Jean-François Thony, the President of the Siracusa International Institute for Criminal Justice and Human Rights, addressed the participants of the seminar on the significance of the pilot training program, the challenges of international criminal law, and expressed gratitude to Tbilisi State University for its support in the implementation of the project. He further noted that the REACT training platform provides the project participants with an opportunity to share their experiences with each other. Furthermore, the project will facilitate collaboration among professionals.
A series of sessions, involving both Georgian and foreign specialists, will be held at Tbilisi State University from June 18 to 27.
