The Faculty of Law of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University organized a special event dedicated to the 85th birthday of Professor Rolf Knieper, distinguished German legal scholar and long-standing friend of Georgia, as well as the presentation of a commemorative volume published in his honor.
The event was attended by Judge of the European Court of Human Rights and President of the Fifth Section, Prof. Lado Chanturia; Acting Rector of Tbilisi State University, Nino Gvenetadze; Dean of the TSU Faculty of Law, Associate Professor Moris Shalikashvili; vice deans; members of the academic staff of the Faculty of Law; distinguished guests from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Germany, and other countries; as well as students.
The event was opened by the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Associate Professor Moris Shalikashvili. In his welcoming remarks, he extended a warm welcome to the distinguished guests and expressed his sincere gratitude to Professor Rolf Knieper for his long-standing, close, and fruitful cooperation with Georgia and the TSU, Faculty of Law. He noted that the commemorative volume dedicated to Professor Knieper’s 85th birthday represents a modest token of appreciation for his exceptional contribution to the development of Georgian civil law and legal scholarship. Professor Lado Chanturia spoke about Professor Knieper’s remarkable legacy and his pivotal role in the development of Georgian private law. He emphasized that Professor Knieper stands among the founding figures of modern Georgian private fathers and that, through his active involvement and expertise, he made a significant contribution to the drafting and refinement of the Civil Code of Georgia.
During the event, special attention was drawn to recognition of Professor Knieper. He has been awarded the title of Honorary Doctor of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University and is also an Honorary Citizen of Georgia. These distinctions reflect the exceptional place he occupies in the academic and public life of the country.
