Teaching of economic science in Georgia began 102 years ago. A conference was held at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) to mark this occasion. TSU Rector Jaba Samushia, Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business Giorgi Gaganidze, professors and students attended the event.
After the conference, professors of the Faculty of Economics and Business gathered in the yard of TSU Building 1. The Rector of TSU, the Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business and faculty representatives laid wreaths at the grave of Pilipe Gogichaishvili, the founder of economic science in Georgia. They recalled the history of the faculty and paid tribute to the great scientist.
Ivane Javakhishvili initiated teaching economic science at Tbilisi University opened in 1918. Pilipe Gogichaishvili, a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Leipzig, who is known as the founder of economic science in Georgia, was in charge of this work. On July 30, 1922, the Faculty of Socio-Economics opened at Tbilisi University. This marked the start of economic science development and training of qualified staff in Georgia.
By decision of the Academic Council of TSU, Avtandil Silagadze, Academician of the Georgian National Academy of Sciences, Professor of the Faculty of Economics and Business of TSU, Head of the Department of International Economy and History of Economic Doctrines was awarded the Ivane Javakhishvili Medal for his fruitful scientific and pedagogical work.
“It takes a lot of work to make such an important contribution to the development of science as Avtandil Silagadze did. We should mention his most important books, which will be even more useful and valuable for new generations. Therefore, we want to appreciate this merit, express our respect and award Avtandil Silagadze with an honorary award,” Rector Jaba Samushia said.
Academician Avtandil Silagadze recalled the deeds carried out at the university, spoke about the importance of the years he has been associated with the university, thanked the faculty and the university for the important award.
“The award you gave me is of great importance. I would like to thank you very much for the fact that I always feel very important support and cooperation during my work at the university. I will continue my university activities with greater motivation, joy and energy,” said Avtandil Silagadze.
