Academician Jaba Samushia, the Rector of Tbilisi State University, opened a student scientific conference. During the conference, students presented the findings of a field research expedition they had undertaken in Racha.
The research was conducted as part of a project funded by TSU. The objective of the expedition was to conduct a comprehensive study and generate a detailed map of the region’s landscapes during the summer season.
“TSU scientists and students are making great strides in the development of complex geographical research and cartography. Cartography is a very serious matter, and it would be beneficial to begin creating toponyms. Toponymy is a sensitive subject and significant part of politics. Knowledge from various agencies should be integrated in a complex manner, and a joint product should be created,” said Jaba Samushia.
The project revived an initiative launched by Professor Niko Beruchashvili in 1979-1991, which involved conducting summer field study internships in landscape science and landscape cartography for students across the Caucasus.
As a result of the project, a collection of materials from the student scientific conference was published in Georgian and English. This collection is based on the empirical data that the students obtained during their field research. The collection titled “Racha Complex Geographical Research and Cartography” includes ten scientific articles written by students and three scientific-methodical articles by mentors. This work is a significant achievement in the field of complex geographical research and cartography of Racha.
Tengiz Gordeziani, an associate professor and the president of the Alexander Aslanikashvili Georgian Cartographers Association, was the project mentor. Zurab Laoshvili, a professor at GTU and vice president of the association, was the invited mentor. The scientific supervisor was Saba Modebadze, a TSU doctoral student and the Association’s Secretary General. The project consultant was Tedo Gorgodze, the Association’s Vice President and Academic Doctor of Geography.
A similar student project funded by TSU is planned for the near future. It will be dedicated to studying the landscapes of the Bolnisi and Tetritskaro municipalities.
