In 1924, TSU had 12 basketball teams. The best players got united in one strong team and became Tbilisi Champions in 1925. After two seasons, the university won Georgian Championship. Levan Palavandishvili, Vakhtang Tsitsishvili, Vakhtang Mdivani and Robert Mdivani – they all joined a symbolic team of the Soviet Union. Basketball players of the 1940s-50s made a special contribution to the development of Georgian basketball. The university was at its peak when legendary Nodar Jorjikia, Mikheil Kekelidze and Suliko Tortladze came to study there.

Before the 1940s, only non-Georgians were playing in women’s teams. Tamar Gegelashvili was the only exception. In 1944, a women’s team of basketball players was established upon initiative of Shalva Diasamidze, head of the Department of Physical Education. In 1948, the women’s team won the championship. In 1952, Davit Kamushidze undertook the team leadership.

In 1973-1974, the women’s team hosted the teams of Charles University in Prague and Warsaw University. Later, they visited the respective countries and lost only one out of six games with Warsaw University. In 1979, women’s and men’s teams won the championship of “Karishkhala”  Spartakiad.

The men’s basketball team won the championships in 1991, 1993 and 1995. Later, in 1996 it won a victory during the Student Days.

From 1998, the women’s team was leading throughout Georgia. Before 2010, it won Georgia’s cup and championship one after the other. In that period, Eldar Kapanadze and Iana Avsajanishvili were the coaches of the team.

In recent years, the men’s team successfully competed at Super League championship of Georgia:

During a 2009-2010 season - silver medal; 2010-2011 season – silver medal; also in 2010-2011, the TSU team became the winner of Korkia-Sakandelidze Memorial Cup.

Only the men’s team participated in the 2012-2013 season. They started preparations in August and, TSU started the season in October with the strongest team.

As part of the project “Student Days 2014” held by the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs, TSU basketball team took the 2nd place in street basketball.

Student Basketball League was held during the same year, where TSU won the 1st place in the first round.

During the Student Days competition held in 2015, TSU student team took the 2nd place in street basketball.

Student Basketball League was held during the autumn semester, where TSU won the 1st place in the first round.

During the same year, TSU basketball team participated in Georgia’s A-League championship, winning the 4th place.

In 2016:

Georgian Student League – 1st place

Student Days – 2nd place

A-League championship – 4th place

In 2016, TSU launched negotiations with the company Hyundai Auto Georgia on formation of a joint basketball team. The negotiations proved successful. Irakli Kharjavanidze, head of the TSU Department of Culture and Sport was appointed as the President of the newly established club. The coaching staff was led by Nikoloz Cherkezishvili, coach of Georgian under-21 basketball team.

In 2017, TSU-Hyundai started to compete in A-League, the second tier in Georgian basketball. The team that was mainly composed of inexperienced players withstood competition with the tournament’s favorite teams and moved to the Super League.

The club’s task was to maintain its place in A-League, to raise young players’ qualification and form a strong team by the future season. Still, as already mentioned above, TSU-Hyundai competed quite well during the season and for a certain period of time, it was very close to moving to Super League.

In 2018, TSU-Hyundai won the 1st place in A-League and managed to return to Super League. Since 2011, the TSU basketball team has regained its place in Georgia’s supreme championship.

It is symbolic that this great victory has coincided with the 100th anniversary of TSU.
