Jano Bagrationi, a famous choreographer, established a choreographic section at Tbilisi State University in 1934. The section, which involved 50 dancers, had a diverse repertoire. A lot of dances from various parts of Georgia were performed. During the 2nd Olympiad of Folk Dance in 1937, two members of TSU’s ensemble won the first place.

The ensemble also participated in the plays staged by TSU’s theatrical troupe.

After Jano Bagrationi’s quitting in 1948, Roman Chokhonelidze became a new head of the ensemble. Under his leadership, a number of dances, among them “Kazbeguri,” “Perkhuli,” “Parikaoba,” “Khorumi,” “Gandagan,” etc. were staged with absolutely different interpretations. During the 7th Student Olympiad in 1951, the choreographic ensemble won a gold medal.
