In 1962, a rugby team was established at Tbilisi State University. Kako Kusikashvili was the initiator of opening the rugby section and the first coach. The team was being trained in Vake, on the stadium of student dormitory. Along with TSU students, students from other universities were also playing in the TSU team. During the Soviet Union, the team achieved a lot of successes at various Universiades and championships.

During a certain period of time, TSU did not have a rugby team, because it had no relevant infrastructure.

Since 2014, the work started to establish a new rugby team. Later the team was established and led by Gia Jokhia.

During the Universiade in 2016, TSU team took the 2nd place in rugby sevens and is now participating in the national regional league of Georgia.
