A small group of enthusiasts started to develop volleyball in Georgia in 1926. Frequently, due to absence of volleyball net, players were using gymnastic ladders. Volleyball soon gained popularity at various Georgian universities; teams were established and since 1958, volleyball has become a university sport.

The volleyball team of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University was officially established in 2010. Presently, women’s and men’s volleyball teams are operating at TSU. The women’s team participated in the Trans Caucasian Universiade in Kars three times, winning the 1st place at all tournaments. TSU Volleyball Team has received gold medals at the Georgian Universiade three times. During the 2011-2012 season, it took the 4th place out of 8 teams at the Georgian Championship. The tournaments are held in both beach and classical volleyballs.
