Presentation of Tamaz Gamkrelidze’s Work “The Epic of Gilgamesh (Transliteration)”

A presentation of the previously unknown work by Academician Tamaz Gamkrelidze, “The Epic of Gilgamesh (Transliteration),” was held at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University. The edition was published with a foreword by Professor Martin Worthington, a world-renowned Assyriologist from Trinity College Dublin.

In 2023, manuscripts kept in Gamkrelidze's personal archives appeared for the first time at the anniversary exhibition of the Department of Assyriology at the TSU Museum. These manuscripts contain a complete transliteration of the Epic of Gilgamesh (tablets I–XI), which the author completed during his postgraduate studies with Igor Dyakonov in St. Petersburg. However, the work had not yet been published.

The work attracted the attention of Georgian Assyriologists Nino Samsonia and Zurab Baratashvili, who requested an evaluation from Professor Worthington. According to Worthington, this rare transliteration fits chronologically between the works of Campbell Thompson (1926) and Andrew George (2003). It represents a valuable contribution to Assyriology, as well as to Georgian and world science.

The work was published by TSU Publishing House. The event was organized by TSU and the Academia Europaea Tbilisi Knowledge Hub.
