TSU Representatives Pay Tribute to Memory of Georgian Cadets

Students, professors and representatives of the administration of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) paid tribute to the memory of Georgian cadets fallen in the fight against the Russian army and laid a wreath at their memorial.

Rector of TSU, George Sharvashidze said that February 25, 1921 is one of the hardest days in the history of Georgia. In that period, all university students, professors, staff were involved in the fight against the Red Army. “Four students of Tbilisi University were killed in this struggle, the son of Professor Gekhtman was also killed. Our students were recruited as nurses led by one of the first female professors at the university, Vanda Gambashidze. The future rector of the university, Niko Ketskhoveli, and American Professor Robert Blake, who was giving lectures at Tbilisi University and who later became the director of the Harvard University Library, were wounded in these battles. Unfortunately, this struggle ended with the occupation of Georgia, however, the momentum that existed then is still very strong,” Rector Sharvashidze said.

In the days of the war against the Red Army, with the involvement of students and professors in the hostilities, the doors of the laboratories and clinics of the University’s Faculty of Mathematics/Natural Sciences and Medicine were open to the needs of the war. These laboratories were served by university professors and students.

“We, the students of Tbilisi State University, pay tribute to the young people who fought against the 11th Army on February 25, 1921. These young people fought for the independence and glory of our country. They set an example of self-sacrifice for the independence of a country. Our generation continues this path and I am sure that the new generation will be able to continue the work done by these people with dignity,” Alexander Gabashvili, President of TSU Student Self-Government, said.

101 years ago - on February 25, 1921, the Russian Red Army occupied Tbilisi. Students of Tbilisi State University who were volunteers in the front lines, including Maro Makashvili, Nikoloz Kalandarishvili, Pavle Beshkenadze, Gio (Giorgi) Gamkrelidze, died while defending Tbilisi. The Soviet Empire hampered the development of Georgia for 70 years.

101 years later - with the occupation of 20% of Georgia and now invading Ukraine, Russia is still trying to restore the empire. Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University stands with Ukraine and the Ukrainian people and condemns the invasion of Ukraine by Russian troops.
