Jaba Samushia Visits Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”

The Rector of Tbilisi State University, Academician Jaba Samushia, together with the university’s delegation, held a meeting with the leadership of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” in Sofia as part of his working visit to Bulgaria.

 

During the meeting, the parties engaged in discourse pertaining to the prospective avenues for collaboration between TSU and Sofia universities. Rector Samushia provided the hosts with an overview of TSU’s scientific achievements and explored potential avenues for continued collaboration in the domains of education and scientific research. Furthermore, the participants deliberated on the implementation of joint publications and research projects. It was agreed that a joint ethnographic expedition to Bulgaria and Georgia would be organized in 2025.

 

The representatives of Sofia University introduced the members of the TSU delegation, which included Deputy Rector Erekle Astakhishvili, Head of the Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology, Professor Ketevan Khutsishvili and Associate Professor Rozeta Gujejiani, to the principles of the Faculty of History’s functioning and conducted a tour of the learning areas. Furthermore, the delegation visited the Museum of Paleontology and Historical Geology, which houses more than 200,000 fossil specimens, rock samples and geological maps of Bulgaria and neighboring regions.

 

The TSU delegation also visited the university library, which is the first academic and largest scientific library in Bulgaria with a collection of over 2,686,121 items.

 

Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” was the first higher education institution in Bulgaria to be established at the end of the nineteenth century. Over time, it evolved into a prominent scientific hub in the Balkans, and currently, it is the largest and most esteemed university in the country, comprising 16 faculties.

 

As part of the working visit to Bulgaria, a meeting was convened at the Petritsoni Monastery with the Archbishop of the Bachkovo Diocese. The two parties have resolved to convene a joint Georgian-Bulgarian international conference, the objective of which will be to examine the history of relations between the two countries over the centuries. Additionally, the delegation observed the Georgian antiquities that are preserved within the Petritsoni Monastery.
