The 4th International Conference “Terminology - Heritage and Modernity", which is being held at Tbilisi State University, has gathered representatives of the universities and research institutes from Sweden, Austria, Lithuania, Iceland, Canada, Greece, Latvia, the European Association for Terminology (EAFT) and the International Information Centre for Terminology (Infoterm).

The event was organized by the Department of Scientific Terminology and Translation Dictionaries of the Arnold Chikobava Institute of Linguistics at TSU. The Department, which is the oldest terminological center in Georgia, continues the traditional practical and theoretical work on Georgian terminology and maintains close relations with European terminology societies. In the digital era, the development of terminological bases and scientific research is of great importance for the Georgian language to gain a foothold in the European family.

Nana Machavariani, Head of the Institute of Linguistics, spoke about the importance of the conference, the development of the field, its relevance and the challenges in the modern world: “A very important event is taking place at the University. Famous specialists and institutions working in the field of terminology share novelties with each other, talk about challenges and achievements that existed and continue to exist in our profession,” said Nana Machavariani.

The Department of Scientific Terminology and Translation Dictionaries of the Arnold Chikobava Institute of Linguistics has been organizing local and international terminology conferences for more than ten years. In 2014, “Terminology Issues” was created, and since 2014, a Georgian terminology database - Georgian Term Bank - has been created at the Department.

The Dean of the Faculty of Humanities of TSU, Darejan Tvaltvadze spoke about the importance of the conference and the activities of the Institute of Linguistics: “Everything that is old and creates the history of the field is very valuable and precious, but the most important thing is to develop, to adapt to modern standards and achievements, to say a new word in science. From this point of view, it is necessary to hold similar conferences and share experiences.”

Henrik Nilsson, President of the European Association for Terminology (EAFT), noted the progress made in the development of Georgian terminology. As part of the conference, he gave a public lecture at Batumi State University.

Due to the efforts of the Institute of Linguistics, the modern standards of terminology, as well as the Guidelines for Terminology Policies prepared by UNESCO, have been translated into Georgian.

Marina Osadze and Natela Muzashvili, employees of the Institute of Linguistics, were awarded at the conference for their contribution to the development of Georgian terminology.
