The Conference is Dedicated to the 100th Anniversary of Chabua Amirejibi

 May 27-29, 2021

The International Scientific Conference aims to present the events of 1921 in an interdisciplinary context foregrounding historical, literary, cultural, political, ethnological and other aspects of the loss of independence and Georgian occupation.

After the forcible overthrow of the Democratic Republic of Georgia (1918-1921) in 1921, the Soviet regime incorporated the country into a totalitarian state, the Soviet Union. Students of Tbilisi State University also sacrificed their lives in the struggle for the independence of Georgia. The establishment of the communist tyranny was followed by the emigration of the government of the Democratic Republic of Georgia to Europe and the emergence of hotbeds of resistance in Georgia, the protest of Georgian intellectuals and citizens, repressions and mass terror.

1921 is a significant date in the history of Georgia. The events of this period were reflected in various spheres of life in the country. 1921 was a tragic year which significantly conditioned other events in the history of Georgia. 1921 is the beginning of the Soviet era for Georgia that needs a new understanding from a modern perspective and interdisciplinary analysis. Therefore, this period gains a special significance 100 years after and creates different perspectives regarding the evaluation of both the epoch and its various aspects.

The Conference is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of a Georgian writer Chabua Amirejibi (1921-2013).  Both his life and work were determined by his anti-Soviet activities and the fight against the Soviet ideology. In 1943, Amirejibi was arrested and charged with incitement of armed insurrection. At various times, he was sentenced to death, to 25 years in prison.  He spent a month in a death row cell waiting for his death.

Amirejibi escaped three times during his imprisonment and his sentence was doubled. He also participated in political prisoners uprisings. After 16 years of imprisonment, and exile, in 1960, Chabua Amirejibi began his literary career. The novel “Data Tutashkhia” published in 1972 brought an incredible recognition to the writer. It has been translated into many languages, and the Russian translation is authorial. The multi-series film “Data Tutashkhia” has also been released. Chabua Amirejibi's second novel, “Gora Mborgali” (1995) describes the Soviet era, the Gulag. Its main character is the author's alter ego. A round table discussion on “Chabua Amirejibi 100 -The Soviet Era in Literature and Cinema” is planned within the framework of this Conference.

  We invite representatives of the Humanities and related fields to participate in the International Scientific Conference: historians, philologists, political scientists, sociologists, culturologists, ethnologists, and art critics.

The organizer of the conference is the Faculty of Humanities, Tbilisi State University.

 The Conference will be held online.

Rules for abstract formatting: 

Abstracts are accepted for Georgian authors in Georgian and English. 

For foreign authors - in English. 

The word limit of abstracts is 300-500 words in each language.
