Saba Basiladze Saw His Profession From a Different Perspective While Studying in Germany

A second-year Master’s student of Private Law at the Faculty of Law of Tbilisi State University (TSU), Saba Basiladze, spent one semester studying in Germany at Martin Luther University. According to Saba, during this productive semester abroad, he discovered new, more engaging, and different “branches” of his profession.

“While studying in Germany, I was able to look at my field from a broader perspective and identify new development paths that align even better with my interests and abilities  – something that motivates me even more. At Martin Luther University, I clearly saw the principles and approaches that guide German universities in organising the teaching process. I did not participate much in additional activities; I was mainly concentrated on the courses I had selected at the university,” Saba tells us.

During his mobility, the TSU master’s student explored topics such as international commercial arbitration, German and European private law, EU competition law, and mechanisms of resolving international disputes. As he notes, these courses were particularly exciting for him, and he had not had the opportunity to study them at TSU.

Alongside his academic involvement, Saba also travelled across Europe. He visited Portugal, Spain, the Czech Republic, and Hungary, though he admits that he was primarily focused on discovering different German cities, as domestic travel was free for students. Germany’s culture and social norms seemed to him “harsher, stricter, and more formal compared to southern countries”, yet the city of Nuremberg left an especially warm impression with its “peaceful, comfortable, and cosy atmosphere.”

For Saba Basiladze, the greatest achievement of his exchange semester was the opportunity to see his profession from a fresh perspective. At the same time, he familiarised himself with the specifics of foreign higher education, received a high-quality education in English, and shared experiences with international students. As he told us, even after returning home he continues to deepen his knowledge with renewed motivation in the fields that captured his interest abroad.
