UNIDROIT Representatives Give Public Lecture at TSU

On July 14, the Secretary-General of the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT, Rome, the Italian Republic), Professor Ignacio Tirado, and the Deputy Secretary-General, Professor Anna Veneziano, paid an official visit to Tbilisi State University.

The event was opened with welcoming remarks by the Deputy Rector of Tbilisi State University, Ms. Nino Gvenetadze, the Deputy Minister of Justice of Georgia and Associate Professor Giorgi Dgebuadze, and the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Associate Professor Moris Shalikashvili.

Within the framework of the event, Associate Professor Tamar Zarandia and Assistant Professor Giorgi Amiranashvili delivered an introductory report concerning the application of UNIDROIT legal instruments in Georgian judicial practice and their significance for the development of the Georgian legal system and legal space.

Subsequently, Professor Ignacio Tirado and Professor Anna Veneziano delivered a public lecture to the audience, dedicated to UNIDROIT’s centenary history, the international legal instruments developed by the Institute, their practical significance, and the prospects for future cooperation with Georgia. After the lecture, a discussion was held, during which participants had the opportunity to engage with the guests on matters concerning the Institute’s activities and the practical application of its legal instruments.

The event was attended by the academic and invited staff of Tbilisi State University, former and sitting judges, representatives of the Ministry of Justice of Georgia, the State Insurance Supervision Service of Georgia, the Georgian Competition and Consumer Protection Agency, the Georgian Bar Association, and the Chamber of Notaries of Georgia, professors from various higher education institutions, practicing lawyers, participants in UNIDROIT scholarship and internship programmes, as well as students.

Following the conclusion of the event, a working meeting was held between representatives of the Faculty of Law of Tbilisi State University and UNIDROIT, during which the prospects for deepening institutional cooperation were discussed. As a result of the meeting, a decision was made to prepare and sign a framework cooperation agreement between the parties, which will lay the foundation for a long-term and multifaceted academic partnership between the university and the Institute.
