Presentation of the Album “100 Years of Caricature in Georgia”

A presentation of the album “100 Years of Caricature in Georgia” (1880-1980) was held at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University. The album’s authors are art historians Irina Abesadze, Nino Chogoshvili, Kristine Darchia and Salome Chanturidze. The publication was prepared as part of the Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation’s fundamental research program. The presentation was attended by Professor Darejan Tvaltvadze, the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities at TSU; Professor Zaza Skhirtladze, the Head of the Institute of Art History and Theory at the Faculty of Humanities; representatives of academic and scientific circles, and invited guests.

According to the authors, the history of caricature, one of the most interesting phenomena in fine art, dates back several centuries. Nevertheless, it remains relevant to this day because caricature is an artistic and socio-culturological phenomenon that unmistakably reflects a country’s political, social and cultural situation. Georgian caricature is practically unknown to the public and has received little study even in scientific circles.

Accordingly, this album is one of the first attempts to logically organize a large amount of visual material and trace the logical patterns of caricature and satirical painting in Georgia encompassing a century-long temporal span. A comprehensive analysis of caricatures by both Georgian and non-Georgian authors living in Georgia offers a novel, hitherto unexplored perspective on Georgia’s history, facilitating a reinterpretation of its cultural and sociopolitical landscape.
