Renovated Observatory at TSU

Tbilisi State University Rector, Academician Jaba Samushia, Minister of Education, Science and Youth of Georgia Givi Mikanadze and Deputy Minister Zviad Gabisonia visited the renovated laboratory, the Evgeni Kharadze Observatory and Planetarium at the Physics Department of the Faculty of Exact and Natural Sciences at TSU.

The Astrophysics Laboratory is the only unique educational center of its kind in the South Caucasus region, equipped with a modern telescope, planetarium and astronomy room. The observatory and planetarium are intended for teaching not only astronomy but also physics and astrophysics. They are also used for observing celestial bodies and conducting practical work. TSU students and scientists observe near space in the laboratory.

The TSU Building 2 telescope and planetarium were first installed in 1952 by Academician Evgeni Kharadze. The original telescope was a 5-inch refractor mainly used for educational purposes. The planetarium operated with a manual projector that could display stars, planets, comets, and asteroids. In 1981, the observatory dome burned down, resulting in the loss of most of the telescope.

The laboratory was completely renovated in 2025. A new telescope was installed, the dome was restored, and the planetarium and lecture space were renovated. The laboratory is now equipped with a modern APM LZOS 175/1400 F/8 Triplet APO Refractor telescope. With a 175 mm diameter objective and a 1400 mm focal length, the telescope provides clear and detailed views of various celestial objects, including planets, stars and comets. The telescope is ideal for observations and astronomical imaging. The renovated planetarium is equipped with a modern SupersStar 5800 digital system that allows for an interactive learning experience for students and schoolchildren.

The Evgeni Kharadze Observatory of the TSU Physics Department is one of the leading centers in Georgia that provides professional training in astronomy.

The TSU Rector, the Minister, and representatives of the Ministry toured the Condensed Atmosphere Physics and Instrumental Chemical Analysis Laboratories in TSU Building 2 and met with scientists and students.
