The TSU Youth Center held a summary event for its volunteer program, Tutorium.
Tutorium is a non-formal education and support program at the university. The program’s goal is to support the academic and social integration and language learning of students (ethnic minorities) in the one-year Georgian language preparation program with the help of experienced, senior student tutors.
The Tutorium project was initiated within the framework of the USAID Unity Through Diversity Program, which is implemented by the United Nations Association of Georgia (UNAG), with financial support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The Center for Civic Integration and Interethnic Relations (CCIIR) implements the program in cooperation with TSU.
Since the implementation of the preferential policy began in 2010, the number of ethnic minority students enrolled at Tbilisi State University has increased every year, which is clearly a positive development. At the same time, the need for their linguistic and social integration is growing. In response to these needs and existing challenges, TSU is implementing the Tutorium program. Since 2016, the program has had approximately 300 volunteer tutors and 3,900 ethnic minority participants. In 2024, 30 tutors successfully completed the program, and approximately 370 ethnic minority students benefited from it. After receiving training, volunteer tutors coordinate a one-year Georgian language training program for groups of 10-15 ethnic minority students. They help resolve problematic issues caused by the language barrier, teach students how to navigate the city and academic space, introduce them to the country’s diversity, raise awareness about future professions to help them make informed choices when moving on to the bachelor's programs, and develop their reasoning, critical thinking, teamwork, and presentation skills.
Tutors strive to achieve the above goals with the help of a program-developed guide, as well as through their own initiatives and activities tailored to the group’s needs.
The Tutorium program develops the tutors’ leadership skills, provides them with experience operating in an intercultural environment, and increases their sense of civic responsibility, as they realize that through their activities, caring for the integration of ethnic minorities, they are making a significant contribution to the peaceful development of the state.
