Manana Khachidze – Best Female Scientist

Professor Manana Khachidze, Head of the Department of Computer Science of the TSU Faculty of Exact and Natural Sciences, has won the 2022 Prize of Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation of Georgia “Women in Science” for special achievements in the field of information technology.

The main goal of the competition announced by the Foundation was to identify and encourage an exceptionally successful female scientist working in the field of information technology.

“The competition will promote the implementation of the Gender Equality Plan approved within the framework of CALIPER project financed within the European Union research and innovation framework program “Horizon 2020”, linking research and innovation for gender equality,” Rustaveli National Science Foundation notes on its website.

Following were the eligibility criteria for female scientists to apply for participation: a person with a doctorate or equivalent academic degree, who is engaged in scientific research and/or academic activities in a Georgian research organization and/or higher educational institution.

According to Manana Khachidze, not any specific work or project was evaluated, but rather the entire activity in the field of information and communication technologies, from a research, pedagogical and professional points of view.

“I have never participated in such competitions before. I did not intend to do it this time either, but the insistence of the ladies from my department (Computer Science) made me decide in favor of participation. I had received the President’s scholarship very early as a young scientist (it was during Shevardnadze’s presidency). In this case, money is not important. I am grateful that I was evaluated and appreciated in a proper manner (maybe I am ambitious). Since graduating from the university (in 1987), I have been involved in both research and pedagogical activities. A large portion of the money (it is not very much) will be spent on various student needs, as well as other needs related to the educational process and encouragement of students. If money is left, it will be spent on publication of an article in a scientific journal that does not cost cheap,” Manana Khachidze noted.
