Professor Martin Worthington Awarded University's Gold Medal

Professor Martin Worthington of Trinity College Dublin was awarded the University's Gold Medal. TSU Deputy Rector, Professor Erekle Astakhishvili presented the medal to the professor of the Department of Near and Middle Eastern Studies - Al-Maktoum Center for Middle Eastern Studies at Trinity College - for his international support of TSU’s scientific achievements.

In 2010, at an international conference on the Epic of Gilgamesh held at St. John's College (Cambridge), Worthington presented Mikhako Tsereteli's translation of the epic, thereby contributing to its re-recognition as the first Georgian translation.

In 2018, Martin Worthington produced the world's first Sumerian-language film, The Poor Man of Nippur, which was nominated by the British Arts and Humanities Research Council for the 2019 Research in Film Awards.

TSU Publishing House published Tamaz Gamkrelidze's book “The Epic of Gilgamesh (Transliteration)” with his foreword.

Worthington also delivered a public lecture to TSU students and professors entitled “Ancient Mesopotamian Studies: Approaches, Questions, and Methods.” During the lecture, he discussed the structure of the Epic of Gilgamesh and provided examples from the cuneiform text, as well as their English translations and interesting interpretations. At the end of the lecture, he answered questions from students and professors.
