Permanent Conference of Rectors of Georgia Joins EUA as Full Member

The Permanent Conference of Rectors of Georgia has joined the European University Association (EUA) as collective full member. The Permanent Conference of Rectors of Georgia is the first from the region and Eastern Partnership countries to become EUA’s collective full member.

The decision was unanimously adopted by the EUA Council. The membership was preceded by a long and difficult selection process, which ultimately confirmed that the Permanent Conference of Rectors of Georgia is an independent and effective unit.

The European University Association (EUA) represents more than 850 universities and national rectors’ conferences in 48 European countries. EUA plays a crucial role in the Bologna Process and in influencing EU policies on higher education, research and innovation. Through continuous interaction with a range of other European and international organizations, EUA ensures that the independent voice of European universities is heard. Thus, Georgia’s strengthened positions in this very important European Association will promote our country’s future integration into the European Higher Education Area as well as assist the involvement of Georgian higher educational institutions in the Bologna Process.

“Membership to EUA is a recognition of the Permanent Conference of Rectors of Georgian universities. Now, we will have more levers to influence the processes ongoing in the European Higher Education Area,” George Sharvashidze, Chairman of the Permanent Conference of Rectors of Georgian higher educational institutions and Rector of TSU, said.

The Permanent Conference of Rectors of Georgia was founded in 2019 and it unites 35 higher educational institutions. A thematic quality assurance group was established within the framework of the Conference with the aim to promote the development of quality culture at the universities through sharing experience and best practices, discussing challenges and creating opportunities for professional development. In 2021, Rector George Sharvashidze was re-elected as the Chairman of the Permanent Conference of Rectors for a second term.
