On December 19, the Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology at Tbilisi State University’s Faculty of Humanities organized a scientific session in memory of Soso Chanturishvili (1940-2010). He was an associate professor, and later a professor, in the Department of Ethnography at Tbilisi State University from 1970 onwards.
He received the Georgian State Prize in Science and Technology (2000), the Ivane Javakhishvili Medal (2000), and the Order of Honor (1998) for his significant contributions to the education of students and his fruitful scientific work. Soso Chanturishvili is the author of the Georgian-language textbooks: The Principles of Ethnology (2005) and Ethnology (1993). Under his plan and guidance, the Ethnology Chrestomathy (1997) was published. Chanturishvili initiated work on an ethnographic dictionary, which was published posthumously in 2011.
His name is associated with advancing research in historical ethnology. His work “Life and Culture in Georgia of the V-X Centuries” (1984) is an important study of the reconstruction and analysis of Georgian ethnographic life and social, economic and cultural realities.
Professors from the Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology presented reports at the session: Ketevan Khutsishvili: “The Life and Work of Soso Chanturishvili;” Rozeta Gujejiani: “Soso Chanturishvili and Georgian Historical Ethnology;” and Teimuraz Gvimradze: “Memories of Soso Chanturishvili.”
