Jaba Samushia Awards Gold Medal of the University to David Prangishvili

The Rector of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, Academician Jaba Samushia has awarded the Gold Medal of the University to David Prangishvili, Member of the Academia Europaea, Honorary Professor of the Pasteur Institute (France), Foreign Member of the Georgian National Academy of Sciences, Visiting Professor of TSU, for his fruitful work at TSU and his special contribution to the internationalization of the university.  

 

During the event, Rector Jaba Samushia spoke about the professional activities and achievements of David Prangishvili. “David Prangishvili is a world-class scientist, he is one of the Georgians who made a significant contribution to the development of his field, biology. Over the years, he has worked in various European universities and led laboratories. It is very important for us that Mr. David Prangishvili has never broken his connection with his “alma mater” and we are glad that he has finally returned to Tbilisi State University and is actively engaged in scientific and research activities,” said Jaba Samushia.

 

David Prangishvili is a visiting professor at TSU’s Faculty of Medicine and shares his knowledge and experience with students at all levels. His merits are very important for the promotion of biology and microbiology. It was on his initiative that the Georgian Association of Microbiology was established in Georgia, which is carrying out very important activities and gathering many young people. David Prangishvili thanked the TSU Rector and faculty representatives for the award and recalled the years he spent at the university. “When I was a freshman at the TSU Physics Department, I could not imagine that I would receive such an important award from my home university. The creative and interesting environment there prompted me to continue my scientific work in biology and virology. I have spent most of my scientific work abroad. Today I have returned to my university, and I am happy to contribute my knowledge, experience and international contacts to Georgian science,” said David Prangishvili.

 

At the event, David Prangishvili donated copies of his publications to the TSU Library. On the initiative of the Rector of TSU, a fund for David Prangishvili’s publications will be created in the library and the TSU Publishing House will print a collection of the author’s most important articles. The event was attended by Maia Bitskinashvili, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Mzia Kutateladze, Director of the G. Eliava Institute, representatives of the academic community, students and invited guests.
