Jaba Samushia Opens University Book Festival at TSU

Tbilisi State University hosts the 2nd University Book Festival, which brings together 10 higher education institutions and 24 publishing houses.

The event will last for two days, and textbooks, fiction, science and children’s literature will be exhibited in the university premises. The exhibition is organized by the TSU Library and the Georgian Publishers and Booksellers Association.

In his address to the audience, the Rector of TSU, Academician Jaba Samushia discussed the plans related to the TSU Publishing House and presented the initiative of publishing and translation contest of university textbooks.

“The TSU Publishing House has a very important and great experience. Throughout its century-long history, it has published a number of important textbooks and scientific works that are essential for the education system and science. With new editions and translations, we want to encourage university books and publications to return to their niche, as well as to take care of the protection of authors’ rights. As for the exhibition of books at the university, we want to make it a tradition and hold such an event every year in our premises,” said Jaba Samushia.

The festival was dedicated to the World Book and Copyright Day and the 148th anniversary of the birth of Ivane Javakhishvili. The exhibition presented approximately 100 works, including foreign and original scientific literature in all fields, such as the humanities, exact and natural sciences, legal publications, works of economists, medical textbooks, books in the field of psychology and education.

“Participation in this event is of great importance for the Georgian Publishers and Booksellers Association. This is a university book festival, a format which has no analog in Georgia. It is highly beneficial that the foundation of this festival was laid at Tbilisi State University,” said Tamar Lebanidze, the chair of the Association.

The two-day festival is replete with a plethora of activities, including informative lectures, book presentations, and discussions.
