Minister of Education, Rector Meet with Representatives of TSU

Giorgi Amilakhvari, the Minister of Education and Science of Georgia, and Academician Jaba Samushia, the Rector of Tbilisi State University, met with the academic staff of TSU, representatives of the administration and research institutes to discuss the challenges facing the university and higher education sphere.

 

The meeting with the Minister was attended by members of the Academic and Representative (Senate) Councils of TSU, directors of research institutes, deans of all seven faculties, and representatives of the TSU administration.

 

Giorgi Amilakhvari discussed several important issues related to the development of higher education, including the model of financing universities and the issue of government priorities. The Minister also spoke about the process of internationalization of universities. He talked about the possibilities of the Erasmus+ program, the development of online and distance education, the attraction of foreign students, and joint and double degree programs.

 

The meeting was held in a Q&A format. Giorgi Amilakhvari answered the questions of academic personnel and expressed his readiness to work together on the challenges facing the university.

 

During the meeting, Rector Jaba Samushia briefed the Minister and the university community on the new developments and challenges. The Rector focused on the Prime Minister’s recent decision to double the scholarships for students and to waive the debts of those students whose student status has been suspended. He noted that important infrastructure projects have been launched at TSU, as a result of which all educational spaces will be fully equipped in the near future. The Rector focused on the construction of a student dormitory and a new administrative building. He spoke about the purchase of the own clinic for the Faculty of Medicine of TSU, the reconstruction of the 6th Building of TSU, the arrangement of internal and external spaces, student corners in all buildings. According to him, it is planned to reconstruct the examination center and equip it with modern equipment, which will allow the university to conduct examinations in electronic format.
